In-School Workshops
BHS Educators can visit your classroom and bring history to life through two History Hits the Road programs. The Common Core Curriculum for Social Studies practices employed include gathering, using, and interpreting evidence; comparison and contextualization; chronological reasoning and causation.
Comparing Past & Present Classroom Practices
Students will experience what life was like in elementary schools in the early 1900s, and make comparisons with their present day classroom. They will enjoy an old fashion spelling bee, examine school artifacts, and model clothing from that era.
Common Core Social Studies Practices:
- Gathering, Using, and Interpreting Evidence
- Comparison and Contextualization
- Chronological Reasoning and Causation
History Detectives
Using primary sources, including documents, letters, and photographs, students will become familiar with earlier life in Queens. Acting as detectives, students will gather, describe, and evaluate evidence and use their own critical thinking skills to answer specific questions. In doing so, they expand their knowledge of local history while developing their documentary research skills.
Common Core Social Studies Practices:
